SPEAKER’S VISIT TO NSC SPURS POSITIVE ENERGY AMONG STAKEHOLDERS

The Speaker of the National Assembly Rt. Hon. Dr. Moses Masika Wetangula accompanied by the area MP Hon. John Makali and his counterparts from sirisia Hon. John Waluke and Kimilili Hon. Didmas Barasa visited the Company on 27th July 2024 to discuss challenges facing Nzoia Sugar Company and the way forward.

The Chairman of the Board Hon. Alfred Khang’ati welcomed the team and appreciated their support which has seen the company receive funds to pay off farmers arrears worth Ksh. 269 million shillings and part of employee arrears worth Ksh. 150 million shillings.

During the visit, the speaker and his envoy toured the factory to assess the overall performance of the plant and announced plans for the installation of a new and modern mill. He reiterated that his visit aimed to support the revival of the ailing company and boost production that would benefit both the farmers and employees.

Hon. Wetangula stated that the Sugar Bill once in place will address long standing challenges within the sector, providing a robust framework that supports fair practices, enhances operational efficiency, and ensures the sustainability of the sugar industry. He added that this comprehensive approach will bring significant benefits to all stakeholders, fostering growth and stability in the entire sugar industry.

As an ardent fan of Nzoia Sugar Football Club, the speaker encouraged the Board and Management to support the football club take back its lost glory. He further indicated that he will soon plan a visit with the football club management so that he can understand the challenges facing the club and find a way of supporting it.

Speaking during the event, the area Mp. Hon. John Makali encouraged management to work around the clock to ensure that there shall be no further pile up of both farmers and employees arrears. He also requested management to consider casual employees and support them by employing long serving ones and ensuring they are paid on time.

Hon. Didmus Baraza, MP for Kimilili echoed the sentiments of the area Mp on the welfare of casual employees urging management to support them since they are also an integral part of the Company’s growth and development.

 These initiatives promised by the Speaker will enhance the company’s financial stability and operational efficiency, supporting the livelihoods of farmers and workers alike. The collective optimism and renewed confidence among all involved signal a promising future for Nzoia Sugar Company, as these strategic efforts aim to transform and rejuvenate the organization.

KUSPAW secretary general Nzoia Branch and the KUSPAW national chairman Mr. Benard Yaola appreciated the efforts of the leaders to fight for the rights of farmers and employees in the region. He however requested the speaker to support the payment of the balance of staff arrears by ensuring it is in this years 2024/25 budget, stating that what was recently paid to the workers was a small fraction of the entire arrears.

In attendance was ambassador Nganga designated for United Arab Emirates, area MCA Caleb Wanjala, the area chief Mr. Martin Kwata, Nzoia Sugar Management team, Board of directors, farmers and their representatives, employees and other stakeholders.
