Nzoia Sugar Company is soon set to start paying its farmers based on sucrose content
in cane delivered as opposed to cane weight
following the recent launch of the unit.
The sucrose testing unit was launched in October 2021 and initial tests are being
undertaken by the technical team from the Sugar Directorate before the system
is fully made operational.
This mode of payment will be beneficial to both the miller and the farmer. On one
hand, the farmer will be encouraged to maintain his cane properly for high
sucrose content production while the millers will be challenged to improve
their efficiency levels as well as get high quality raw material.
So far, the Sugar Directorate has set up 11 Cane Testing Units in several
factories.
Sensitization programs will soon be rolled out by the Sugar Directorate.
