Cane farmers accuse trade bloc of scheme to cripple sugar sector

A section of sugarcane farmers have now vowed to intensify their opposition to the establishment of Lake Region Economic Bloc (LREB), accusing it of attempting to cripple the sugar industry.

They (Members of sugar cooperative drawn from Kisumu, Kericho and Nandi) say the block is a hindrance.

This comes just a week after cane growers indicated that the LREB and the Kenya Union of Sugar Plantation and Allied Workers (kuspaw) for conspiring to introduce zoning regulations.

Kuspaw has filed a case in a Kisumu court seeking orders that LREB should bar other sugar millers from harvesting cane from zones not within their jurisdiction, not to issue new license and stop construction of weighbridges near other millers.

The case has so far been settled after reaching an agreement.
